Complicated lip color, slice of style jacking, & a return

I am always thrilled to death when I can find a lip color that can survive my morning dose of crack a.k.a coffee. Therefore, I was more than amped when I was recently sent a little tube of Maybelline Superstay 16 hour color + conditioning lip balm. I finally got around to testing it out this weekend after having left it on my bookcase for three days.

I find it a little scary to receive/buy make-up that comes with directions, especially when its something like lipstick/lip gloss. My little sister knew how to put lipstick on by the time she was four years old; its that easy! So, when I pulled out the folded slip of paper with the directions, I knew that this was not going to be a new addition to my frequent "fast and flawless make-up application" regimen!

Step one is to apply a thin layer of color on your lips and let it dry completely for 2 minutes. I always get a little too carried away with applying color to my lips. Its an addiction that I developed in junior high, when frosted lips outlined in dark liner, preferably black or brown were making an unfortunate comeback. After this post, I am gonna have to go jump in the Mississippi in shame for admititng that. Lawd forbid if those pictures EVER circulate! Anyway, because of my color coating addiction, I ended up having to wait almost three minutes for it dry on my soup coolers.

The next step and "officially" the last step is to apply the conditioning balm to "seal in the softness". I applied this a good three or four times, just in case my lips decided to laugh at the notion of sealing in softness on my lips. I will admit that my colors stayed light red and soft all day. My lips were still red after the morning crack, my dose of weekend afternoon crack(Caramel frap), and my new evening crack(boyfriend)!

Technically, the last step is to apply the conditioning balm, but the last and most important step to me is : MAKE SURE YOU HAVE OIL BASED MAKE-UP REMOVER IN YOUR POSSESSION!! Yep, I got home happy and feeling a little light in the knees from my evening crack and tried to remove the color of red off my lips to get back to my natural mauve color to no avail. I swear, I could hear my lips giggle as I vigously tried to scrub the color off my lips. I eventually re-read the directions and noticed that I needed oil based remover. Since I was without make-up remover, I took a chance at using baby oil and soap and eventually saw my natural lip color.

To make a long review longer, if you are looking for something to keep your lips colored and soft all day, then look no further, BUT if you want that plus in a timely order you should probably keep looking. As my friend observes it, the best place to apply this is while waiting in traffic on I-240 on her way to work when you have a few unwanted minutes to dilly dally!

COAT OF THE DAY

It's been a second or two since I posted a "Coat of the Day", so here is it's return. Its pretty safe to say that I am leaning toward a cream or white coat this season, because they make my eyes twinkle like crazy. This asymmetrical coat by Mackage is another reason that I am currently in the process of building a shrine to worship this line on a daily basis!

Weekend Overload: Fashion, Music & More

Well, I have been very caught up these past couple of weekends with various "crappola" and haven't had the time to post as much as I would like. So, I have created a new category: Weekend Overload! Every Friday, I will give you a big post full of stuff to tie you over for the weekend. Its gonna be the usually fashion filled post that includes a "look" that I am feeling, but also a link or two to a blog/site for you to visit AND a musical sample/suggestion to keep you company through the weekend. Therefore, let me break a bottle of champagne on my computer screen and consider this category open!

WEEKEND LOOK

Yep, it has been really cool here in Memphis! I am in the mood for boots and thermals, sans jackets. I put this look together, because I think its the perfect fall transitioning into winter look. I have had the thermal bookmarked for over a month, so it was time for me to release it to you, my lovely readers! The boots are to die for!

Counter clockwise: Old Navy Skinny Jeans, $36.50, Old Navy; STEVEN "Luciah" tall boot, $229, Macy's; Ellen Tracy "Hanna" tote, $398, Macy's; Gold Hoop earrings; E.vil Paparazzi thermal, $92, Girlshop

***I love those boots!

WEEKEND LINK

STEAL STYLE

Forget what you have heard or read, the best place to go to try and dublicate your favorite celebs style is no other than Steal Style! It's one of my daily reads. The lovely Angel will give you the ultimate heads up on how and where to duplicate a look you have seen on the back of the style mavens on the red carpet, plus Angel gives you cheaper alternatives that are REALLY identical to the celebs look without breaking your wallet! Love her!

While there, you will also have the opportunity to read some really great post about the history/ news of former and current african american fashionistas such as models, actresses, singers, and socialites.

MUSIC DOSE

Well, I am a huge music fan! When I am not drooling over the latest fashion trends and kicking back watching my favorite NFL and NBA teams and players, I am drowning myself in music.

I am sucker for a scrumptious piece of dark chocolate that can sing me into a diabetic coma. One man that is at the top of my list of crooners is Tyrese. I have loved him and his voice ever since he was on the back of a bus hocking my beverage of choice; Coca-Cola!

Well, Tyrese is about to come out with a new double CD called "Alter Ego" on December 5th. One album is going to consist of all R&B songs, which made me fall in love with him in the first place. The second CD, however, will be an all rap album that will introduce the public to his rap persona Black Ty. The first single is called "One" and it definitely feels like the wonderful Tyrese that I love. You can listen to it here or here. I have had it on repeat all day!

I must admit that I am interested in hearing some samples of his rap music, but the new single definitely has me hooked on him, again! Plus, Tyrese is currently on tour and the dates and locations are below:

10/27 - Columbia, MO - The Blue Note
10/29 - Denver, CO - The Paladium Night Club
11/2 - Baton Rouge, LA - The Great Hall
11/3 - Spartanburg, SC - Club Liquid
11/5 - Atlanta, GA - South Beach Bistro & Bar
11/9 - Sacramento, CA - Avalon Nightclub
11/17 - Ventura, CA - Majestic Ventura Theatre
11/18 - Phoenix, AZ - Celebrity Theatre
11/19 - Las Vegas, NV - Empire Ballroom
11/25 - San Diego, CA - House of Blues San Diego
11/27 - Anaheim, CA - House of Blues Anaheim
11/30 - Highland, CA - San Manuel Casino
12/2 - West Hollywood, CA - House Of Blues Sunset Strip

Unfortunately, Memphis is not on the list, but I will survive! Check out Tyrese's MySpace page here!

Well, I hope that help holds you up nicely! See ya Monday!

Dress coats!

I remember growing up I always had at least two different coats; school/play coat and church/dress coat. I prefered wearing my dress coat everyday all day. I assume it was because that's when I felt the prettiest. There are some girls who don't like to dress up, but that wasn't me. My favorite dress/church coat from my chica days was a black and white houndstooth coat with a bright red scraf. I knew I was the best thing on two legs with my black patent leather mary janes and white tights to boot!

Well, while continuing my seasonal hunt for coats I noticed the vast majority of dress coats. When I say dress coats I don't neccesarily "dress coats", but coats that actually look like dresses! I think I am in love!

This Mui Mui coat is a really adorable example of the dress coats that I have been seeing. Normally, if I saw a dress like this, I would turn my nose up at because it looks to frumpy, but if it had a back like this I would snatch it up in a heartbeat. I love this coat! Paired with some tall boots and tall gloves....ooh, I think I am about to faint!

COAT OF THE DAY

This Burberry Prorsum Lace coat could also fall into the category of a coat designed to look like a dress, a shirtdress that is! The bone buttons and scalloped cuff, collar, and hem are lovely details! Burberry+bone buttons+lace+silk jersey lining=$$$$$!

The cutest sweater

Well, in here in Memphis, the winter weather is finally trying to tease us for more than two days. We are in day three of jacket weather. Yay!!!! The cool air has provoked me to start re-evaluating my sweater game and that lead me to one of the cutest sweaters I have seen in a minute.

I saw this sweater and instantly thought of slopes and magically becoming an urban concrete bunny. Yes, chicas, the mittens come with the sweater. Too cute! I really love the styling option of combing it with a blue oxford shirt underneath. I do love oxford shirts! I love the idea of a skirt, but I would have chosen a different color and/or material. Too much blue! My mom would be so proud to hear me say "too much blue". During my collegiate years, everytime I went shopping I came back with bags full of every shade of blue I could squeeze into. I'm over it now!

Getting back on track, this is definitley a cute as button sweater and I might be soon e-mailing this link to my "maternal figure" as a possible Christmas gift!

Stormin' 'Strom

Well, the previous post made me want to explore around Nordstrom a little me more. To stick to my usual M.O, I made a beeline to sale section. Here are some very worth while picks for you to flip and click through!

I saw this dress while looking for the previous post's dress and thought that this was cute, but it was a little too "wedding-ey"! Its still is a lovely addition to any closet, because truthfully, can you ever have too many silk charmuese dresses in a fashionistas' closet? I think not!

This dress is way too cute and being priced at $24.90; too good to be true! The cowl neck allows you to still be thrown into the current cowl neck frenzy this season, plus you can wear it as a dress or a tunic. You can choose it gray(shown above), black, or brown. Therefore, since its so inexspensive it might be wise to snatch one in every color. I can just imagine all the belt and boot options floating through ya'll little heads! I think I am gonna order one for Christmas to give to my little sister, a budding fashionista. I am so proud!

This cropped wool coat is lovely! I will advise that this is not the best cut for everyone, especially busty me! It is, however, a very clean cut with princess sleeves and military style that epitomizes the current state of fashion. A nice find!

This flounce crop balloon jacket is one of those little pieces that are good to have in the closet. I love having little staples in my closet, just to add that little "ump" to a usual bland/boring outfit. Of course, balloon cuffs have been slapped on almost every piece of clothing, except jeans. By the way, if I ever see that, someone is gonna have to catch a brick to the head.

I sooo want this jacket! Its a jacket, but this chick would probably rock it as a top. Its a twill cropped jacket from French Connection, whom clothes I love! I love white tops/jackets/coats! The image of crisp, clean, and classic will always be "in' for seasons on. Therefore, this jacket is a perfect addition to any closet.

Luna Chix short sleeve trench coat. Trench coat...ha! Anyway, I like this top because it is versatile and a steal for under $15. Its supposedly body hugging, but its hard to tell when its modeled on someone with the body circumfrence of a broom stick.

Chocolate Overdose

A couple of weeks ago, my friend sent me an A.P.B, via e-mail, to help her find a sexy, but classy (oximoron, if I ever heard one) dress for a cocktail party her boss throws every year before Thanksgiving. She is one of those women who HATES to shop, especially for clothes. How are we friends? I have no idea. Anyway, since she has helped me out on more than one occasion, I grabbed a can of Diet Coke out of the fridge and settled in to do a little dress divulging online (She lives in Kentucky, so snooping around here in Memphis wouldn't help her much).

After getting a few leads here and there, I finally found a dress that would be perfect for her and sent here the pic and web address. She loved it, so she dropped the appropriate credit card info and the dress was on its way to Kentucky.

That was over two weeks ago and today she sent me an e-mail to tell me she received the dress and how much she loved it. The right color, fit, style, and feel! I am jealous for two reason, really three. One reason is because I wouldn't have anywhere to wear it and the other two reason wouldn't fit in that dress, at least classy!! **glancing down to my chest**

Well, here is the dress that I sent her and I am still hating on her for now owning it! Its a satin back organza babydoll dress from Laundry by Shelli Segal. Its looks really beautiful and mi amiga says it looks equally beautiful in person. Glad I could help, but I wouldn't know what accessories to wear with it! I'm thinking minimal!

A whole lot of link lovin' going on!

It's been a while since I updated you all on some of my favorite new links. The great thing about having a beauty/fashion blog is that you get the opportunity to come across other lovely blogs and bloggers that share your same love and apprecitation. So here are some new ones that I have been constantly visiting lately.

  • The Make-Up Girl blog - If you need tips, tricks, or suggestions, then this is the place to click to!
  • Bon Bons in the Bath - A lovely blog for us bath lovers. I spent a nice chunk of time browsing around and instantly feel in love. I also scoped out a couple bubble baths that I HAVE to try...ASAP!
  • Style Critics - "Saving the world from atrocious fashion, one celebrity at a time"; enough said. Plus, a girl loves reading other people's opinion WITH a number rating!
  • Daddy Likey - I LOVE THIS SITE! She writes the best posts that hit ever single fashion loving  fiber in my body, but with a funny angle. I knew I definitely loved this site after I read her encounter at Vicky Secret.  You would think us busty chicas were buying medication for a "personal" rash instead of a bra. This is one of my new daily reads!

Now I am off to finish washing! I love washing, don't ask me why. It might be because when I am done, it looks like I have a closet full of clothes! Illusion is lovely!

Dealin'!!!!!!!

After spending this past weekend dealing with "Aunt Flo" and gourging on multiple bags of Halloween peanut M&Ms, last night I felt that I needed to do some major cardio! The best place for me to do that is doing laps in the frugal fashion mecca: Target! Here are some things that threw in my cart while working up a sweat.

The first thing I got was this vintage style chunky bracelet and only had to pay $4. I don't know why it was cheaper there than online. Believe me, I have investigated all over looking for a flaw. Nada. I think its perfect to pair with an all balck outfit. Splash of color, chicas!

I have never been a fan of puffer jackets, but I do own a couple. Fashion forward purposes only! Anyway, I might not like puffer jackets, but I have never been a fan of puffer vests. I never understood the purpose of them. What about the arms!?! Don't they get cold? Anyway, imagine my shock when I threw this puffer vest in my cart, without a gun to my head. I just thought that this is really cute! I dunno, but its hanging in my closet and I hope that I have the fashion desire to wear it at some point this winter. It looks even nicer in person!

I didn't get this, because this shirt + my chest = me looking like a "lady of the evening". Not a good look! However, my exercise a.k.a shopping buddy bought this shirt. Its really frilly and fun. Although its considered a tank, but it looks more like a wrap shirt. Although winter is slowly walking up the street, she still decided to purchase this top. Its really pretty, though! An ivory colored one sounds delicious!

I bought this jacket for my little sister. Her birthday is next month and she loves bomber jackets. I liked it, but I am indulging in my grown woman. I'm 25 now, it's about that time!

**I could go broke and happy spending time in the clearance bins of Target, especially in the accessories aisle.

COAT OF THE DAY

To stick with the Target theme, I decided to post on this Merona wool paris coat. Lovely fit, perfect details and design, and very affordable. I'm loving the position of the middle button on the waist. It helps to define the waist. Love it!

When I saw these Roberto Cavalli boots, I thought they were the hottest thing under the sun, but a very good fashion friend of mine disagrees. I love them, but I wouldn't know what to wear with them. Maybe a lovely casual dress?! Am I the only one who thinks these boots are hot?

Bookmark Cleanout #1

My bookmark is loaded with various fashion finds and I have decided that I go ahead and start cleaning out my bookmarks one by one. Some have been saved for well over a month so don't be surprised if you see a summertime style shirt. I "plan" to add something to the post very often throughout the day, so keep coming back. You might see something that you love!

I first saw this bag on "Oprah". She was answering various questions from viewers and one of the questions was "What is in your purse?". One of the her assistants brought out her bag and it was a dark brown, all leather version of this Fendi bag. I knew it by the horse on the side. This bag is HUGE and you could tell by all the stuff she had in it, ranging from the normal purse finds like her Louis Vuiton wallet and large make-up bag all the way to a DVD of 'Freedomland" and an itenerary for Maya Angelou; very random, but loved it! You know that since the mighty "O" owns this bag, its most likely not cheap, plus its FENDI! DUH!

I thought that this lace tie jacket by Catch A Fire was a cute and different piece that would look great in any closet. The back is really gorgeous and beautifully done. This lace jacket is perfect to top off the basic jeans and white tee look for that need of color. I still love this piece, but I can do without the price.

Cute, trendy, but still very casual. Since it is 100% cotton, you could pass this Diesel trench off as a winter top. Once again, I still love this jacket!

I thought this Baby Phat jacket was really cute and I loved the necklace the model is wearing. The gold necklace is as equally cute!

Illuminate me, baby!

At this year's Fashion Week, all the lights were not only coming from the flashes from photographers and heavy light fixtures, but also from the faces of the models on the runway. It was all about illuminating faces and I was definitely intrigued and wanted a lighteed face of my very own.

After sitting my butt at more than a few make-up counters, I decided that the best line for me and my complexion was Stila Illuminating Liquid Foundation in 60 Watt. What I really love about this foundation is the easy ways it glides on. Normally, if you want most foundations to glide on you have to mix it with a little moistrizer or wet a make-up sponge. Since I like ot apply make-up sans sponges, this right up my make-up alley. The small light reflectors, which is the key ingredient in illuminating make-up, is very subtle and sparkly. Its not about shimmer this season, its all about light reflectors.

Now, Mama loves her some good concealer and especially if its from the same line as the foundation I am using. Since I was so thrilled with the foundation, I put a quick order for the matching concealer in Medium. I was not so thrilled with the concealer. It didn't blend in that well and bleed away quick without covering the little imperfections that I was trying to conceal. The finish was soft, dewey, and natural, but didn't conceal. It was a waste for me, but maybe that's just me. For now I will stick with foundation and put the concealer in the "At-Least-I-Tried-It!" basket and keep it moving.

Boots Bonanza!

It seems like more and more new boots are being added to various stores everyday and I must say that mama is loving 'em! Here are some new ones that I have noticed pop up in the last couple of days. Hopefully you will see a pair that makes your eyes and feet tingle with delight!

Bruno Frisoni Satin Shoe Boot

I know that this doesn't look like a boot, but its described as a boot and just ohhh sooo sexy and hot!

Moschino pumps

Moschino studded pumps. They brown suede, round toe, lined with metal studs, and an embellished bow at the toe. Since these shoes are so "standout-ish", its best that you dress around these shoes. When these shoes are on your feet, the last thing you want is a excessively printed dress. In the end, these shoes are pretty hot and anyone would be lucky to have these in their possesion!

COAT OF THE DAY

This Andrew Marc leather hooded jacket is perfect for the chick that loves to be comfortable and casual, but also extremely fashion forward at the same time. The coat comes with a detachable hood that is lined with raccoon fur and a rabbit fur lined collar. The tie belt at the waist helps to define a waist, which is very neccesary when dealing with such a "heavy" fabric as leather. Personally, I love this coat, because its rugged but at the same time very hot and sleek! Lovely.

Who's your Missoni?

Missoni is a line that has been around and praised for years for their vibrant colored knit prints. I remember earlier this year seeing the Missoni family on "Oprah" and found out that all the prints are hand drawn/created by one of the sons(I think). I love drawing and fashion, so maybe that is why I am such a fan of the Missoni.

I own one Missoni turtleneck that I have had for about 7-8 years. When I was still stumbling around my high school, I took a trip to L.A and remembered hearing that if you are a fan/slave to fashion and find yourself in L.A, then you should definitely hit up the thrift stores in and about Beverly Hills and that is what I did. You can find gorgeous and designer pieces at really low prices.I found a green, blue, and purple Missoni concoction that I can't fit anymore, but refuse to let it go! It was over 5 years old when I found it, plus the 8 years since. I consider it vintage! Its one of those items in your closet that doesn't matter how tight, torn, or worn out it is, you can't say "goodbye" to it. Its 100% wool, but didn't make me itch or warm the crap out of me. I loved it!

Missoni pieces are so faboulous, but not for frugal fashionistas. A simple tank can run you for almost $1000! Still lovely, though!

Go here and here to learn more about the Missoni line and history and then skip here to gawk at some of their pieces. I LOVE this dress and I am not sure why!

Dior Cannage Slouch Boots

Boot season is slowly, but surely sneaking up us. These Dior boots are a definite pair that I would LOVE to have in my possesion. They would look hot with a simple pair of jeans and cream sweater or a nice fall dress.

COAT OF THE DAY

If you can't see the fierce in this coat, then you should run screaming to your optomologist, immediately! Cream, buckled belt at waist AND neck, and delightful buttons for days. Its from Earnest Cut and Sew, which is a label that I have only seen once a couple of weeks ago. If you have the fierce swag for fashion, then you might be able to pull this coat off with those Dior boots above. However, I would suggest these boots and this bag in Hot Chocolate, because the coat has so much going on that the accesories should be sleek and simple!

For the past few days, I have been nursing one of those pesky warm weather colds. The cold is pretty much gone and I am more than glad. One reason that I am glad is because I have finally gotten the chance to try out Keracare's DeMineralizing Treatment.

Your hair is full of various minerals delivered via things you put in your body such as food and in my case, medicines and vitamins. This tub full of wipes holds some lovely miracle towelletes. I followed the directions on the tub and became instantly aware of the positive effects. My hair felt wayyy better and the colored looked more vibrant than pre-antibiotics.

Since my hair is soooo thick and growing like weeds, it was a somewhat tedious job using the towelletes, because of the neccessity of having to section off your hair to use the towelettes. Other than that, quite innovative.

This is also a perfect post-perm and/or pre-coloring treatment. It helps in the prevention of damaging your hair, because those various bottles at your beautician filled with chemicals. If you use chemicals in your hair, then I highly recommend you try this. If I would have used these before dying my hair, maybe I would be feeling a lot better about the coloring all together!

Target Couture

All us of budding fashionistas have known about the couture line from the lovely people at Target for awhile. Truthfully, can you really imagine yourself spending that much on a hoodie with the Target logo. Although the line consists of cashmere pieces and high quality leather, it might seem a little weird to common folks if you live in a city that is not very knowledgeble of the latest fashion lines and trends; like me here in Memphis. It might just appear that you bought a cheap, but kind of cute shirt from the Target next to Home Depot instead of dishing out well over a $300!

Payless has also fallen in line with Target and has there own "uppity" line of shoes coming. How will people be able to tell that you are being fiercly fashionable instead of fashionable and frugal? I dunno!
